Five birds in Somerton this morning - they tend to land at the top of the large beech just over the west wall of St Michael’s churchyard, and then drop down into the yews.

Hi Ken.
The birds are tending to be seen perched high in a tree just outside the churchyard, although yesterday a couple flew from the yew in the churchyard.  Views are good if distant- you’ll need bins. They like the still conditions so today could be perfect for them.

Some places to check out: https://www.ancient-yew.org/ss.php/county-surveys-of-non-churchyard-yews/2/26/50
There are also files for various churchyard yews.

Hi Gary
How well are you seeing the Norton Sub Hamdon birds? Are they just flyovers or are they showing perched? Seen a few this autumn in different places but still not had a great view.

Another quick look today produced 7 hawfinch around Norton sub Hamdon churchyard.  First time I have heard them calling also.

Hi Gary

Cheers for the fast reply.

No worries mate I thought I would just double check due to Fyne court not being that far from my village of Norton fitzwarren they may well of headed down this way.

Glad you have got too see this stunning bird I was lucky enough to see them at Fyne court a couple of weeks back feeding on seeds in the trees they were showing really well.

Cheers

Stu

Hi Stuart.
Sorry should have made it clearer- Norton sub Hamdon churchyard was where I saw them . No sign yesterday though on a brief visit at lunchtime, although conditions weren’t ideal

2 this afternoon just outside Norton church yard. A bit more surprising was a little egret in the trees above the stream in the middle of the village.  Good but distant views in excellent light

Hi Gary

Is that Norton Fitzwarren church yard?.

Cheers

Stu

At least 5 hawfinches, possibly more, as not all visible at the same time, and mixed with greenfinch, at Bathpool, on south side of canal about 300m west of the swing bridge, around 11 this morning. Also a very confiding kingfisher fishing successfully from the pontoon just outside the car park.
