The Lapwing and Golden Plover flocks have now departed but replaced by a ”fall” of Pied Wagtails in the field south of, and close to the junction of Westhay Moor Drove with Lewis Drove, I lost count after about 150 then later found there were similar numbers on the margins of the private pond opposite Oaks Drove and in the field to the East of it, spent some time sifting through them and found at least 6 definite “Alba”  White Wagtail types. Probably around 500 birds in all, likely on passage and re-fuelling for a few days. Some Chaffinches, Reed Buntings and lingering Redwings amongst them.
Four different Marsh Harriers seen including the Pale “pied” female and a very handsome Silverback Male.
Whilst in the North Hide Graham Conduit and I were lucky to see two different Bitterns in flight with a third Booming throughout.
Total of 189 Cattle Egrets, 153 on Godney Moor and another 36 in small groups scattered around Westhay Moor.
Widgeon numbers virtually the same as February but anticipate they will be departing in the near future.
Scores were :
Canada Goose 53
Greylag Goose 45
Mute Swan 199
Egyptian Goose 2

Another fairly standard count this month (17.02.25), the Lapwing flock have increased in numbers as have the accompanying Golden Plover which are mostly in the distant corn stubble to the south of the reserve and not visible, my estimate was 1500 GP’s and 2000 Lapwing. The apparently now resident pair of Egyptian Geese were feeding in a field adjacent to, and to the east of Blakeway. A very high count of Pochard for Westhay, 18 of these were on the middle of the 3 lakes to the west of Lewis Drove.
Once again, and for the third month in a row 20 acre was pretty much devoid of Duck apart from a handful of the usual suspects which were well outnumbered by Coot, no Goosanders present this month.
About 100 Mute Swans have gone missing, count down to 61 when usually around 150+ in the winter, no doubt out on farmland further afield.
14 Cattle Egrets in the area classified as Westhay Moor, and another 91 on Godney Moor in several different fields so their numbers in the Westhay area have been consistently at just over 100 for the past 3 months.
5 different Marsh Harriers - at about midday 2 males and 2 females were all airborne together over the central part of the reserve and later I saw the very pale female which was not among those I saw earlier.
Scores were :
Canada Goose 82
Greylag Goose 42
Mute Swan 61
Egyptian Goose 2
Shoveler 72
Gadwall 89
Widgeon 439
Mallard 48
Teal 26
Pochard 22
Tufted Duck 36
Water Rail 7
Moorhen 7
Coot 153
Little Grebe 5
GC Grebe 12
Lapwing 2000
Golden Plover 1500
Snipe 1
Cormorant 30
Grey Heron 3
GW Egret 4
Little Egret 14
Bittern (briefly booming, tower hide area)

Fairly standard count this month – the Lapwing flock are mostly in the distant corn stubble to the south of the reserve and not visible, however, when stirred up by the Pylon Peregrine it was apparent they had been joined by a similar number of Golden Plover, about 600 of each species and probably the largest count of GP’s I’ve seen north of the Poldens. Two Egyptian Geese were feeding on the field that the Lapwing have been recently favouring.
Mixed Finch flock to the south of the Reserve included a few Linnets and Reed Buntings.
For the second month in a row 20 acre was pretty much devoid of Duck apart from the four Goosander, a single Tuftie and a few Mallard and Gadwall.
Zero Cattle Egrets in the area classified as Westhay Moor, but 88 on Godney Moor in several different fields, 6 between Westhay & Burtle and about 20 in the Field behind what was Burtle School.
Scores were :
Canada Goose 120
Greylag Goose 26
Mute Swan 153
Egyptian Goose 2
Shoveler 34
Gadwall 103
Widgeon 436
Mallard 38
Teal 27
Pochard 2
Tufted Duck 39
Goosander 4
Water Rail 8
Moorhen 7
Coot 157
Little Grebe 4
GC Grebe 7
Lapwing 600
Golden Plover 600
Snipe 3
Cormorant 37
Grey Heron 6
GW Egret 11
Little Egret 12

There were 112 cattle egrets in three flocks on the fields east of Westhay yesterday afternoon, Monday. None roosting on the reserve as far as I could see. Lots of redwing in the fields too, along with the lapwings. A pair of beardies flitting about pleasingly in the reeds by the island hide.

Recent Cattle Egret sightings: Pedwell about 20 beside the road towards Greylake. Some slurry has been spread which attracted Egrets and gulls.
Near Mudgley. At least 40 in 3 groups on the left side of the B3151 just past the turning to Westhay Moor. They move around but I can see some from my house in Westhay most mornings headed north.

Yes, thanks Mike - the image in the first link relating to the Westhay bird in September is probably the same bird although I would say that its feathering is now fading with age and it looks significantly paler now.

A flock of about 30 Cattle Egrets have been feeding in a field close to my house in Burtle for a few days but have moved on now. It’s a field that had a new ley put down earlier in the year and there are no grazing animals, it’s also had a regular flock of Herring and Black -headed Gulls.

Fairly unremarkable count this month nothing new in, no Pintail or Goldeneye although there were 4 Goosander on 20 acre Lake. I couldn’t find the Scaup Andy Mears reported at Lewis Drove. The only high count for Westhay was 125 Teal, there were probably a lot more. The Lapwing flock was put up by a Peregrine but no Dunlin or Golden Plover amongst them.
Could only find 10 Cattle Egrets on Westhay Moor, supplemented by another 24 on Godney Moor, don’t know where they have gone, didn’t see any on Tealham or Tadham either.
Non water bird highlights were about 25 Siskin and 10 Redpoll feeding in Alders at the north end of Daggs Lane Drove, largest flock of Siskin I have ever seen here, usually just single figures.
There was a very pale female Marsh Harrier, so pale in fact when it first flew up I momentarily thought it was an Egret ! it didn’t seem consistently pale enough to be leucistic but its primary flight feathers are almost white. I haven’t seen this bird before but it is so unusual it must have been noted by other observers elsewhere – interestingly it did engage in some semi display interaction with a male MH and also alighted on a historic nest site.
Scores for the count were :
Canada Goose – 16
Greylag Goose – 8
Mute Swan – 133
Shoveler – 68
Gadwall – 138
Widgeon – 326
Teal – 125
Mallard – 90
Tufted Duck – 17
Goosander - 4
Water Rail – 9 (all heard not seen)
Moorhen – 7
Coot – 93
GC Grebe – 8
Little Grebe - 2
Cormorant – 42
Snipe – 18
Cattle Egret – 10
Great White Egret – 12
Little Egret – 4
Grey Heron – 3
Herring Gull – 1
BH Gull - 6
