Even quieter this morning: just 1 Cetti’s warbler below the west bank and 5 swallows here too. Otherwise, 2 mute swans were the only less usual visitors!
Quiet at the res this morning: 5 common sandpipers, 3 scaup (1m, 2f) still, only 2 Cetti’s warblers (1 east, 1 west), a single swallow and a small flock of sand martins moving through. The best that buoy 5 could manage was an immature lesser black-back.
This morning a common tern perched for an hour on Bouy no. 5. Also 3 common sandpipers and 3 scaup still (1 male).
A lesser whitethroat in the southeast corner by the parking area. The 4 scaup remain. 3 Cettis singing.
4 scaup again (1 male) near the sailing club. And a single common sandpiper near Axbridge Tower.
Didn’t have to venture far from Cheddar Tower at lunchtime today to see some Common Sandpipers. Group of 8 or 9 seen flying over the water from the southern edge, then a single bird showed briefly close to the tower.
Common Sandpiper flock up to 15 this evening in blustery but dry conditions.
A midday visit produced my first Whitethroat and House Martin of the year and the Common Sands now number 8.
Cheddar Res, first thing: 30+ sand martins, raven, green woodpecker, 4 common sandpipers, 2 Cetti’s warblers both below the west bank. And a female grey wagtail which flew off west with a beakful of flies. Too breezy to hear much else!
Early AM, much calmer today: 5 common sandpipers again; 2 singing Cetti’s warblers, one west side and one east side; singing whitethroat on the east side and 2 willow warblers singing here too; and the scaup have returned (perhaps they never went away) with 2 males and 4 females between the Cheddar tower and sailing club; no hirundines this morning.
A very breezy morning at the reservoir. A flock of 13 turnstones was a pleasant surprise. Also 5 common sandpipers and reasonable numbers of all 3 hirundines. A common whitethroat briefly tried to sing near the rugby pitches.l
Early AM, still very windy but more sheltered along southern edge: 5 common sandpipers, 5 sand martins and 2 swallows here; also1st summer little gull; Cetti’s warbler singing below western bank; male sparrowhawk. No scaup seen.
The sandwich tern reported on Birdguides still present late afternoon. Also first winter little gull still and my first house martin of the year.
Two common sandpipers on the west bank around midday. A first winter little gull again (possibly different to the original from February) and the 7 scaup still. Willow warbler singing well. In the wind!
The seven scaup were still present this afternoon. Also one white wagtail briefly near Cheddar Tower just as I was leaving.
