Thanks to Roger, managed to find a single Grey Partridge this afternoon, 80m out from a gateway at Perry Hill, just east of Badger’s Cross.

As were many of the fields around Keinton Mandeville 10 years ago Geoff. Sadly meadow has been replaced by over grazed horse paddocks in that area.

Butleigh Wootton has in previous years been a hot-spot for Grey Partridges. Not so much this year.

Hi Alex,
It’s getting difficult now as the vegetation has shot up in the recent sun and rainstorms but anywhere along the ridge south of Somerton and east of Badger’s Cross, you will find both partridges and a great number of hares (twitching ears in cereal crop doesn’t help). Always scan from farm gates though. Roger

The late Spring sowing of cereals this year has given a dramatic boost to Grey Partridge and Skylark breeding numbers around Somerton. If this is repeated across the county and spraying pesticide is delayed, we could see a resurgence of this English partridge.
