Last night, at a site in the Quantocks, Paul Clement and I were lucky enough to witness Nightjar activity. Churring commenced at 21:53 (we got there far too early at 20:30 !) and went on until at least 22:20 when we left in the dark. Three birds at least were involved - though I could not hear the far distant bird that Paul could.
During wing-clapping display flight, 2 birds came closer and closer to us and eventually passed alongside us no more than 12 feet away. Finally, on returning to the car-park, a singleton bird flew over our heads only a few feet distant. It no doubt helped that we managed to pick a very still evening with no discernible wind. Based on our experiences, now would be a good time to head for traditional Mendips or Quantocks sites to experience these enigmatic birds.
