Hi Tony

Hi Tony,
You are right that you do have to be a bit careful with where young Siskins have actually bred. A few years ago I was ringing on the Suffolk coast in summer & we caught several juvenile Siskins that we assumed had bred locally in the pine forests. However one of the juveniles, which still had its wing & tail feathers in pin (i.e. they were still growing) bore a Belgian ring on its leg!! Despite the fact that its tail was still only c. a third grown, it had astonishingly managed to cross the Channel. Quite amazing.
But if you have had them singing for some weeks then I reckon that’s pretty indicative that they are probably locally bred.
I am quite jealous that you have such lovely birds in your garden year-round.
Dave.
Juv. Siskins coming to our feeders in Shipham.
For the last 6 weeks i have seen a pair of siskins coming to my bird feeder in Ford Road Wiveliscombe and singing at the top of some tall pine trees in my neighbour’s garden.
I saw an immature siskin on my bird feeder today, so i assume they have bred locally? I am not sure how unusual this is in this part of Somerset? I usually only see Siskins ocassionally in winter.
