On my way to Kennard Moor first thing -  I haven’t seen a hedgehog around where I live for about 25 years!  Today I found a dead one -  run over,  just up from where I live! Now there’s one less!
A Barn Owl Hunting on Watchwell Drove first light.
On Kennard at the Coxbridge end, there’s a small public path through a very narrow wooded area (  about 25 yards wide)  - it’s probably a a total of a mile up and back. It has a very dense copse at the end. It’s a very interesting little walk which overlooks open fields both sides. There’s plenty of singing Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler & Blackcap there with the usual Wrens , Robins , Blackbirds and the odd Song Thrush being heard. Also there’s lots of scuttling Moorhen on the rhynes either side.

This morning I flushed an Owl from the copse.  It could have only been a Tawny or Long Eared Owl.
It just shot out past me from the density of the copse,  at a height of about 5 feet. I only noticed its back and wings really but I could hear the ’ whirring of its wings as it ‘panicked’ past me.  It just looked dark brown in the sheltered light of the copse and it didn’t call -  it was silent. I know LE Owls do roost quite low down as I’ve flushed several on Kennard over the years and they were all silent too.  The habitat and adjacent fields for hunting is also good for LEO’S.  Tawny’s of course are very at home in woodland. When I’ve flushed Tawny’s in woods, they can be quite vocal. 
So, it’s a conundrum - any thoughts?
Apparently the Tawny’s nick name is the ‘Brown Owl’  and apparently they often roost in scrub, so that puts them right in the frame.  As the’re 10 times more Tawny’s than Long eared Owls it’s most likely that is was a Tawny.
