44!! Goosanders at Orchardleigh Lake near Frome this afternoon, easily the highest number I’ve ever seen there.  24 female/redheads; 20 males, all very intensely involved with courtship behaviour, bobbing, ‘ducking and diving’.  Amazing sight.  Also 10 mandarin drakes, also seriously combative with each other.  1 male gadwall; 2 little egrets; and 19 herons sitting on the filed by the top of the lake.
