Grass cutting along the road between Wedmore and Lower Weare had brought 5 Red Kites and 3 Common Buzzards to fields around Ashton windmill at eleven o’clock today.
Shortly afterwards, a stop in the car park at Rackley, below, Wavering Down was enriched by a very close encounter with a single Red Kite that flew over whilst investigating grass cutting activities in the fields below.
Yesterday pm we had 6 Red Kites over my field, grass cutting in progress, wonderful sight just wheeling around, no great welcome from the resident crow family. I have seen individuals every other year up here but never a group like this.

Talking of Red Kites I was on a morning walk near the River Tone at Runnington and a dog walker I see quite regularly said he saw a pair of Red Kites near the Rewe Mead nature reserve this week.
The chap is from Berkshire and so is really familiar with the birds.
Yesterday 31st May (before I was authorised to post), 5 Red Kites, at least 8 Buzzards, a male Kestrel and the resident Ravens all day enjoying the silage operations below (Compton) Dundon beacon. Also, good afternoon passage of House Martins and some Swifts.
