No sign of an Osprey at least on the Shapwick Heath area between 10 and 1500 today (Mon).
On Noah’s Lake, 2 Black Terns and 1 Common Tern (juv)? Three Marsh Harriers up together (2 Fem and a Juv).
Osprey still present on Noah’s today. Very active and successfully fished twice in about an hour and a half this morning. A second Osprey was present briefly over the lake around 10:30am too before drifting off East.
In addition to Jim’s list, 3-4 Green Sandpipers and some Snipe also present while 3 Knot paid a brief visit.
Osprey still present on its perch at Noahs Lake this morning ,it seemed reluctant to fish ,however it finally took off and eventually found a catch somewhere in the direction of Westhay,it returned flying over the scrape to the delight of the people present. The scrape was well populated with Little and G-w-Egrets, Glossy Ibis, one Ruff, overflight by a Bittern ,B-t-Godwit numbers increasing, quite a spectacle in the sunshine.
One distant photo of Osprey with fish.

25-08-2016 A brief visit to Noah’s hide this morning, Osprey was still present but seemed to be restless did a circuit of the lake and vanished in the direction of Canada Farm perhaps the bird is about to leave. Two other raptors seen, a Female Marsh Harrier perched in the same tree as Ossy and a passing flight by a male Marsh Harrier. Two G-w-Egrets at the back of the lake, four were seen on the scrape as I returned to CP.Left at 9-30.
Still present this am and caught a large fish, also an adult Honey Buzzard drifted over slowly south at 10:35am, my first in Somerset to cap a good morning for raptors with Buzzard, Marsh Harrier and Sparrowhawk also seen. 2 Great White Egrets and nothing much to note on Meare Heath scrape, still a lot of draining to do before it will be any good for waders.
Osprey still there today; within five minutes of my arrival in Noah’s Lake hide at 14.20, it hovered near the tin shack before diving down to catch a fish. Then flew to the dead tree furthest left of the hide to feed. A Water Rail showed briefly, but well, on the edge of the reeds just left of the hide and a Marsh Harrier also put in an appearance.
A couple of Common Terns were present early this morning but only one seen from midday. the Osprey was still present early p.m.
14-08-2016. A misty morning, I arrived at Noah’s Lake to see the Osprey, as the mist cleared I was rewarded by the sight of two birds ,one bird was perched on a dead tree at the far end of the lake, whilst waiting for it to fly a second bird appeared circled over the lake coming close in front of the hide ,it then spotted a fish hovered several times to reposition itself then dived. Successful ,it took its catch to a nearby perch to enjoy its meal. left at 7-00 am.
The Osprey was still around at least until 1230 when I left. The view over Noah’s has been normalised, thanks to Kevin A. working! ( on behalf of Natural England) who has removed the top of the annoying bush in front of Noah’s Hide. The two Glossy Ibis were in view from Meare Heath hide early this afternoon and they did a couple of airborne circuits showing their colours in the bright sunshine before landing again on the reeded island.
Hi Martin,
The observation of the bird dipping it’s feet in the water was reguarly noticed last year. That bird would drop off the tree stump and dip into the water close to the bottom of the tree before returning to perch. It wasn’t trying to pick up dropped food, just trying to wash.
Also the bird last year, seem to go hunting between 7am -8am around 1-2pm and then again in the early evening. No idea if this one has a similar feeding routine but hopefully more people will post observations.
cheers, Robin
I certainly don’t claim ownership Nigel but nice to know that our regular guest is appreciated.
Your Osprey has made in into ‘Nature Notes’ in todays Times, Martin!
Still present at 08.30 today. It had caught a fish before I arrived (Rob Balch had pictures) and ate it on the usual perch but then flew to the far side of Noahs where it perched on a dead tree with shelter from a strong westerly wind. An interesting observation was that the Osprey dipped its feet into the water several times while flying across the lake without appearing to be trying to catch any prey so we concluded that it was washing the remains of the fish from its feet.

Osprey still present late morning hovering distantly over Decoy Lake, then flew over track to hover-fish over Meare Heath (behind the wood) where eventually caught a fish (rudd?) and flew with it to its fav tree-stump perch on Noah’s Lake - still eating the fish when I left at 12:20hrs.
I saw an Osprey at Noahs this afternoon at 17.10 and it looked very settled on a tree stump to the left of the hide. If it is the annual August visitor, it should be there for a few days.
