There is a considerable difference in size, so guess if they identified it as a heron it would be a grey…

Very true; I suspected they had seen a Grey when they told me about their sighting but then with the recent report you just never know

Reported today (Friday 3 July) on bird information services:

“Adult Night Heron southwest of Watchet still be Washford River at 10.24am”

No further details

Actually my non-birding friend who lives in Watchet said they saw a heron flying over their house the other day being mobbed by gulls. She wasn’t sure if it was the Night Heron or a Grey Heron but in light of this recent report it’s worth a mention

Not sure there’s much chance of seeing it, even if it is still there, as hardly any of the stream can be seen from the public footpaths. The geograph link I posted before is looking downstream from the farm bridge & the pic of night heron is looking upstream (where the Muscovy duck hang out). Possibly a better chance if you walk / cycle up the mineral line, rather than come down from the church (although the well seems to be popular for woodland birds to drink - several blackbird & Chaffinch there). Lots of house martins & swallows nesting at the farm, also a dipper flew off downstream & gold/greenfinches in the fields, along with a juv robin.

Had this from a non-birding friend who lives in Watchet….

“...yes! I do believe it’s on a spot on one of my favourite walks though kentsford farm 😊.. There’s usually some muscovy ducks knocking about there too. You can get to it by parking at St decumans Church, follow the track down through some fields next to an old wishing well.. And if you want to carry on past it you get to the mineral line which is gowgeous!! .. (river on one side and train track on other) which leads to Watchet Town…”

No grid reference or anything but hopefully the directions help ????....

Don’t know if it’s this one, but not too many to choose from around there: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1661946

Is the report on rare bird alert this record or from today?
