AJP was in same pool this morning, although did move elsewhere later. At least one ringed bird has been here a week or so.
Alison tells me that photos confirmed chew bird as AAF, which was one of the first birds ringed in 2016
Alison sent me this reply after I photographed a red ringed bird at Cheddar yesterday:
“AJP was ringed in the nest on Shapwick Heath on 18.4.25, one of a brood of 3. It’s a male (DNA from feather sample).
This is the second sighting reported to us – he was seen flying round the colony shortly after fledging. It’s interesting that he’s still in Somerset – most of them seem to leave the county very quickly after fledging, usually heading north.”
Also AAF was possibly seen recently at Chew Valley Lake, which would make it oldest known egret if true - however the last letter wasn’t obvious, so may have been P, R or T
I’ve posted a report on the sightings we’ve had from the 31 Great White Egrets we ringed in the nest on the Avalon Marshes this year. So far we have had reports for 14 of these birds, sent in from all over the country. Reports from birds ringed in previous years continue to come in as well - the most local is ABN, ringed in 2022, which has been at Chew Valley Lake since the summer - though we suspect it may have attempted breeding on the Isle of Wight, where it was seen in both July 2023 and July 2024. Please do continue to let me know if you see any ringed birds here in Somerset - .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
