Arctic also in Somerset on Friday, but black terns are quite white at this time of year as well, although they remind me more of a little gull

Huge numbers of Swallows and House Martins picking the flies off the surface of the flood water over the banks and nearby fields this afternoon.  A real easy feed for them but I’m not sure why there were so many insects caught in the flood water. Water levels have been rising all day and I guess there are similar sights elsewhere in the county after a night of extremely heavy rain.

Also of interest was a delightful small tern type of bird. Very white small fork tail and the distinctive tern flight. It looked like a 1st winter Little Tern but it was too big. I’ve seen a Little Gull in previous years along this stretch but it wasn’t one of those due to the forked tail. Will try to take another look tomorrow and see if it is still about.
