A Green Sandpiper flew over Bessom Bridge calling late afternoon, only one or two Exmoor records per year on Exmoor usually now. Also 2 Great White Egrets seen, also there Sunday pm, a scarce but increasing species on Exmoor.
13 redhead Goosanders near Gull roost on shoreline just south of Cow Moor Bay whilst observing the gull roost. I was taking part in the BTO WinGS Autumn Gull survey observing and counting gulls coming into roost. The key date is 29 September although counts can be done a week either side. This and the Winter Gull survey still have plenty of sites available for anyone interested in taking part including some key sites, Steart, the Axe estuary and Curry Moor. This is the first nationwide survey for 20 years and aims to see how things have changed in that period, and try to identify key autumn and wintering sites and guage the impact of HPAI (avian infuenza) so is a highly worthwhile survey.
