Whereas along the droves to the North of East Lyng it is all sedge warblers: though yesterday for the first time (been going there for years) there was actually one reed warbler. Also a lesser whitethroat.
A huge Sedge Warbler fall was witnessed this morning in the are known as Tesco’s Pit which is directly opposite Tesco Superstore and Lidl. it comprises a series of pools, reedbeds and scrub. I personally noted 9 Sedge Warblers but a local ringer caught an incredible 17. In addition there was 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 1 Whitethroat and 6 Reed Warblers.
Sedge Warblers are normally very scarce in West Somerset so these sort of numbers are unprecedented. In reality the actual numbers must have been much higher as I noted other birds in the immediate vicinity. Certainly as many as 30 birds, most likely more, possibly 50 plus.
