I realise this is not a sighting but thought it the best place to pass bad news. Recieved this from WWT this evening (19/01/24):
“Good evening, all. For those of you who aren’t yet aware, the tower hide at Bridgwater Bay has been closed until further notice. As part of the handover to WWT, all infrastructure had to be handed over in a good state of repair. Following on from a structural survey, contracted by Natural England, the extensive rot to the four main supporting legs means they consider this building unsafe. Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to close the hide until the necessary works have been undertaken. Julie Merrett and Phil Thorpe from NE have been working tirelessly on this issue, they have the budget secured, the consent in place which due to the SSSI restrictions means there is a very small window of opportunity: 1 August to 30 September. Everything is being done to try and ensure the necessary works are undertaken in 2024. I have sent this email to the Steart Forum and Steart residents mailing list, but please do forward to anyone else who may need to know or be interested. We have also been communicating through social media. We understand and appreciate how many people value and enjoy this hide and will keep you informed as the project progresses. Have a lovely weekend. Kind regards Alys Laver Site Manager WWT Steart Marshes Reserve Office, Stert Drove, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA5 2PU”
Best wishes,
