Close Encounter with a Hobby!
I was driving off of the eastern end ( Coxbridge end) of the moor at 7.15 this morning when I noticed something strange in a gateway - I had no idea what it may be - so I slowed the car right down and eased it as close as I could to get a better view. And…there right in front of me was a Hobby on the the ground. What a wonderful sight it was. It didn’t appear to have caught anything - perhaps it had just eaten it? Anyway, off it went - whoosh, in a flash - that’s the closest I’ve been to a Hobby! A great experience and a classic example of how birding will present you with memorable experience when you least expect it.
This morning two Grasshopper Warblers singing near to each other. A family of 6 Ravens , Great Spotted Woodpecker , Red Partridge calling in the fields & a single Whinchat on the northern side of the moor with a family of Stonechats.
Red Kite and a Hobby on Kennard today.
There’s a footpath at the Coxbridge end which takes you through a small wooded area - it’s about a total of mile up and back. It’s a nice exercise in listening to the birdsong of that little area. Today singing :
Several Willow Warbler
Chiffchaffs
Blackcap
Dunnock,
Long Tailed Tit, Great & Blue Tit
Plus the usual - Robin, Wren, Blackbird , Chaffinch.
