Above and around Chetsford Water today, at least 5 Whinchat, 2 redstart, 2 dippers, plenty of willow warblers, a redpoll, and a single pied flycatcher far higher on the moor than I would expect.
Some excellent spring birding on Exmoor in very warm weather produced most of the summer migrants.
Sites visited included the northern slopes of Dunkery Hill, Chetsford Water, Ember Combe & Horner Water.
Birds of note seen included: 3 Cuckoo, 10+ Pied Flycatchers mainly using nest boxes, 3 Redstart, 2 Grasshopper Warblers, 1 Tree Pipit, 5 Whinchat, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Dipper & a calling Tawny Owl near Pool Bridge. Willow Warblers seemed to be abundant this year. One notable absence was that no Wood Warblers were observed, although I did find 3 in the same area of the Quantocks last week!
