Sadly Geoff I am unable to judge midge density as I seem to be a super attracter and have usually been bitten before leaving the car. Luckily for me Ryan (below) was kind enough to stop his car and invite my son and I to join him in a spot where success was more likely than where we had set up our midge feeding station .
As he mentions below, we were witness to almost an hour of continuous churring and saw one bird in flight.
In my experience Tony, it will be wherever the midges are the most numerous and vicious!
2 Nightjars heard and one seen well last night at Stockhill, with one bird almost continually churning from 21:40 up until we left at 22:30. A lovely sight and sound as always.
Not sure if its bad form to ask, but would somebody be so kind as to suggest the best place to wait for a chance to hear / see these lovely birds?
Many Thanks
Tony
one nightjar tonight 10pm. loud churring close to road on Stock Hill side. then flew over and disappeared towards Mineries.
Went up on the Mendips this week with the missus looking for them. Got driven off by the midges. They are ferocious currently. Never wore any insect repellent. Lesson learnt. Should mention, that the number of song thrushes at SH are phenomenal this year - crescendo of singing! Superb!
Also one heard last night at Stockhill 10.25 pm.
Saturday 2 June. Two sightings 21.50 and 22.12. Two singing at around 22.25 onwards. Stockhill.
At least 2 heard in the Stockhill area last night around 22:15.
