Roy, a survey by Taunton swift group on Monday found 20 occupied swift boxes at the South Street colony, so could be that all adults were out in that flock.
23-June-2026
4 Swifts screaming round our house in Street this evening and 2 entered the regular nest cavity under our front gable, one followed by the other at 20:15 hrs. Neither had re-appeared by 20-50 hrs when we went inside to watch a mostly poor football match!
If they are breeding, then hopefully in this extreme hot weather we wont see a shrivelled dead youngster beneath the nest like we did in late-June-2018.
A “screaming” flock of c40 feeding over my Wellington garden this afternoon , largest number seen so far this year - possibly weather related ?
Lovely evening outside with , potentially, 20+ Swift overhead.
Hope it’s not just me that takes great joy in seeing reasonable numbers.
A single swift over Wellington this evening near normal colony
First ‘screamers’ back in Rowbarton, Taunton. 4 seen together this morning, 30 April, a day earlier than last year.
First of the year for me with 2 over the cricket pitch in Butleigh yesterday, then at a regular nesting hole close by.
4 Swifts - presumed our front & back regular breeders - circling around our house in Street on 25-April, but after a few mins they flew off & not seen since!
First 2 Swifts also seen here in Langport this morning, 25 April. Checking out their nest sites. It is early for Swifts to be back here already, as with other parts of the county.
Lovely warm weather for them this week. Hope it continues and they have a good breeding season and find enough insect food to help rear their young successfully.
Think the local ones have now arrived. Group of four this morning.
One over Ilminster this morning.
3 Swifts over Glastonbury town centre this evening. The earliest sighting for this location.
