I have seen at least one photo of the wagtail & it doesn’t look that light. There was 1 male yellow & some white wagtails from Quantock hides today, plus a Wheatear, 5 dunlin, 3 ringed plover, 3 blackwits & a common sandpiper (not counting at least 5 or 6 LRPs dashing around). A Peregrine did a low pass mid way through & a whimbrel was on the river near Parrett hide. Both spoonbills had been on Otterhampton earlier & the adult returned late afternoon, when the juv was on North Breach - along with 2 greenshank, 3 grey plover & 3 spot red (in varying dress). Another visit today… The Blue-headed Wag still present but in today’s bright sun, the head grey looking a little paler than earlier in the week. I’d still say it is a distinct shade darker than our recent Tealham Channels but I’m no expert on these subspecies. Perhaps a lot more detail needs to be noted.
No Pec today for me despite a careful search for quite a long time.
As I drove away with Dave N around 2pm, a heron flew high across the road just south of Otterhampton Church, heading west. A brief view, basically in silhouette, but I’m almost certain it was a Purple Heron. Would be excellent if it pitched up on Stockland - this evening maybe - but unfortunately I can’t try for that today.
A couple of dozen Whimbrel were off Burnham this am.
Bit late from Sunday afternoon Pec` sandpiper finally came out and gave us a good show! plenty of pied wag`s at least 3x yellow wag`s also a Blue head ! which was flighty but may have been a Channel? quite a few LRP`s and a Bar headed goose!
Quick evening visit: 3 Yellow Wag, the Pec Sand still, a black Spot Red, 1 Green Sand, a dozen Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plover and the usual LRPs, Avocets, etc all on Otterhampton.
The spoonbill spends a lot of its time around the breach
To add to Dick’s post, it was super at Steart today. The cracking Pec Sand eventually seen - it’s a skulker - plus a beautiful male Blue-headed Wagtail, 3 Yellows, and a dozen each of White Wags and Wheatears, all on or around Otterhampton marsh. One Common Sand on the river and the 3 Spot Reds still on the breach lagoon. Plenty of other stuff too of course and the Sunday snack wagon!! Perfect.
Quite surprised to see a Short Eared Owl hunting over Wall Common at 11.00 this morning. Also a Bar-headed Goose at Otterhampton but no sign of a Spoonbill. Two Sedge Warblers singing well.
As well as spoonbill & 11+ avocets by mouth of breach seen from boat on river parrett, we could hear skylarks on stert island & point, a marsh harrier N of breach, c.20 oystercatcher, 2 curlew, 2 dunlin, 1 turnstone & only 1 redshank (didn’t go up kings sedgemoor to their usual roost - last 3 all on huntspill side). Plus a raven patrolling burnham beach & 2 pairs swallow on drive home to banwell (latter both your side of border)
Others reported pec sand, spot red, ringed & LR plovers, wheatears, yellow and white wagtails on reserve
When I arrived at around 9.30 l couldn’t find the Pectoral Sandpiper as well but I went for a walk and came back at around 11.30 and had a further look also the Spoonbill must come in on the high tide as well
The Pec and Ringed Plovers weren’t there this morning - maybe came in from elsewhere on site at high tide. Several wheatears around though, and someone heard a grasshopper warbler in bushes between car park and the Quantock hide.
Pectoral Sandpiper still on Otterhampton marsh seen with 8 Ringed plovers, also at least 6 Little Ringed plovers, 2 Ruff, juv Spoonbill and first singing Sedge Warbler
