Flock of around 15-20 Fieldfare seen at Wellow in North East Somerset this morning
Still exceptional numbers of winter thrushes on the levels in the last week. There must have been 200 in a mixed flock (mostly Fieldfare) at Catcott Lows this morning on the approach to the main hide. I have also seen a lot around Westhay village and at Honeygar Farm. I was talking to a birder in Scotland a couple of days ago who told me that Waxwings are around up there already and that berries are unusually scarce in Scandinavia so who knows what will show up once the wind moves to the north.
First Fieldfare this year in my Butleigh garden this morning. 3 being very noisy and argumentative over windfall apples. A very smart male Blackcap keeping its distance but also enjoying the apples.
Delighted to note “Chipstable’s first” Fieldfare of the winter this morning. (Several Blackbirds and a Magpie were much less enthusiastic.)
At least 4 Redwing on Tucker’s Lane, Baltonsborough at about 08:30 this morning.
Redwing, Wells sewage works yesterday.
Redwings were in Bristol on Friday (same day as a hobby!)
Interestingly, saw a little group flying over the house (Ilminster) today.
Two Redwings over Chipstable this morning, earliest I’ve noticed here in 23 years (but only by two days).
(Almost overlapping with Martin Jordan’s “latest” Langport Hobby!)
