Ah, ok Phil. I was just looking at the posts in the group I posted where people share what they saw, where they saw it (and maybe a photo). I didn’t realise there were follow up requests for personal info.

I’m looking forward to getting back up to Steart soon so hopefully I’ll see one myself!

Clearly the Walrus, then Mike!

Seriously, Dick Best confirmed he has a couple of sightings of Grey Seal in teh Parrett and that they wer eregular off of Hinkley Point by the cooling water outlet.

Gareth - I would do only the SWF want too many personal details that are extraneous to reporting a sighting.

Thanks to all.

Phil

Might be worth reporting it to Somerset and Exmoor Marine Animal Sightings, part of the Sea Watch Foundation

I have seen greys a couple of times off steep holm - they are regular on Lundy (although a common did make it up to slimbridge area a few years ago & of course there is currently a walrus in Pembrokeshire)

Tonight at Steart (17.45 on 26/03/21) there was a seal in the Parret off of theFenning, porpoising downstream between Huntspill Sluice and the sewage works.  Long, heavy, and very dark.  I assume it to be a Grey Seal but no ther features (e.g. nose ) seen.  My first in Steart so while I think Harbour (Common) Seals are seen fairly often in West Somerset by those seawatching, I wonder if anyone has any views on this?  Distribution data for haul-out sites shows Greys to be present in Pembrokeshire and SE Ireland but Harbour Seals not to be in the Irish Sea south of Northern Ireland, but I am uncertain of more general feeding areas.  Would be grateful to anyone who knows more.

Thanks.
