Tx for the replies. You were very lucky Gary to see LSW’s feeding young. Haven’t seen one of these on Exmoor for many years. As regards the fast-declining Wood Warbler I wondered if you walked up from Horner rather than down from Pool Bridge as I did?
In response to Jeff’s keyboard point; both Dipper sightings were brief in flight views of adults!
I take it that should read Dipper with young? (s & d, u & i are next to each other on a std keyboard)
Hi Geoff. When we walked the Horner area we noted at least 4 wood warblers. Lots of pied fly present, but no redstarts. Song and mistle thrushes were also plentiful. LSW heard. Supper with young also seen.
A tour around the moor produced the following :
Dunkery Beacon (north side) & Aller Combe: 5 Cuckoos, 2 Grasshopper Warblers (heard only), 2 Whinchat (pair), 1 Tree Pipit, 1 Wheatear, “umpteen” Stonechats - I counted at leat 8 males some with families including a group sat on top on the cairn on the beacon! Good nos also of Willow Warbler, Meadow Pipit & Skylark.
Chetsford Water & Embercombe: 7 Whinchat, 1 Redstart, 2 Lesser Redpoll (not seen this species here before), 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Cuckoo, 6 Stonechat.
Horner Woods from Pool Bridge: 13 Pied Flycatchers, 1 Redstart, 1 Wood Warbler (either they weren’t singing or weren’t here!?), 2 Dipper, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Treecreeper, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Song Thrush.
