I noticed the same thing on a visit to Longleat in December but that was in the morning. At least 10 and probably many more Red Kites were risking their lives to compete with Lions, Cheetahs and Wolves for scraps of meat on the ground in the enclosures. interesting that they also roost there. See my post in General matters.
I have often wondered why so many red kites are seen in the Frome/Mendip area. A recent visit to Longleat went some way to explaining it. Driving through the wolf enclosure shortly before dark, at least a dozen and probably many more came in to roost. Wolves are obviously wasteful with their food.
I know it’s just outside Somerset but a few weeks ago I counted 10 Red Kites together in Horningsham which is by far the largest number I’ve seen locally.
2 Red Kites low over Faulkland early this morning
A single Red Kite close to the Frome Cheese Show Ground early this afternoon. At least 3 more Red Kites just over the Wiltshire border towards Maiden Bradley.
