The Cattle Egrets seem to be feeding in several fields around Catcott Lows/ Canada Farm. On Thursday I saw some between the Catcott Lows entrance and Catcott village and today they were in a field of cattle near the junction between the South drain and the Black Ditch which can be viewed from the railway line heading west from Shapwick bridge towards Catcott Lows. I also saw a late Hobby in the same area today being harassed by a crow. ST412408.
Just to add that Hobbies at Westhay have been performing really well for the last week. Hunting low down around dawn (seems early but it has been warm enough) and much higher as the temperatures rise. No one particular spot but a great sight with plenty of interaction and calling between the birds. Also above the north hide, one was having repeated goes at a Marsh Harrier while Sparrowhawk circled above, seen on 18/09
Exactly 60 Cattle Egrets came into roost last night at Canada Farm Lake; also there a lone flyover Whimbrel, Great Egret, Kingfisher & Marsh Harrier. The woods en route to the hide seemed to be alive with Goldcrests.
At Westhay mainly from North Hide the Kingfisher performed briefly on Somerset’s most photographed stick!. Also seen were: 2 juv Hobbies, 2 Marsh Harriers, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel & Common Buzzard, 4 Ravens, 2+ Cranes heard calling but not seen, 1 Green Sandpiper looking for somewhere to land, Great Egret, Water Rail and a Chiffchaff in full song. Cettis Warblers were also very vocal!
