We have had 2 males and 2 females in the garden most of this winter here in Stockmoor, Bridgwater. We are close to a rhyne, hedge and fields.
Several visits to my Aller feeders over past two months, & in previous winters: single Reed Buntings (male & female), feeding below feeders & also using the fat balls as a preference. Have also had recent visits from a pair of Bramblings, both singly & as a pair, feeding on sunflower hearts, plus two visits from a female Siskin on nyger seed feeder, as well as regular Finches.
4+ on feeders in my Muchelney garden daily since Christmas.
An annual event now for many years, though that said this has been the best winter yet.
If you live on or near the Levels (where they breed) from other reports hereabouts I do not think it is too unusual.
Hi Shazz. Reed Buntings aren’t common as garden feeder birds across most of the county, but it does happen from time to time. Nice when it does - none yet on my feeders, but not much suitable habitat round here.
Over the last 2 weeks I have started to see 3 male reed buntings feeding off my ground seed, is this a common thing? I have fed birds for years but have never had visits from reed buntings before. Cheers Shazz
