Thanks Paul, I have seen the Wagtails before, (not here though) so I would have recognised it. I think I will stick with Yellowhammer as it fits the bill. I only saw it once, it hasn’t been back yet. We have Long Tailed Tits at present

On 14th July (Saturday) Last year I saw 7 Yellow Wagtails (2 Bright Yellow Males) in the adjacent fields where the public footpath sign is not far from Kings Lane. I agree with Geoff they are likely to be Yellowhammer Haven’t gone there this year but if they are not Yellowhammer could very well be Yellow Wagtails.

Thanks Martin, yes it was May/June time and the Cuckoo was earlier by a week or so. I have it on video. I recognised the song because there was one at Ham Wall a few years ago and I was lucky enough to be there when it sang.

It is only 2 miles from Ashcott to Shapwick Heath where there was a Nightingale singing in May. There are also sometimes Yellowhammers at Shapwick Moor and along Kent Drove near Shapwick village.

I am always reluctant to question another birder’s sightings, but Nightingales are a rare bird on the levels these days. How confident are you in your identification?

We have had a few Birds return here this year, we had 2 Nightingales and Cuckoos recently.

Hi, my neighbour who has lived here 50 years said that there used to be a lot of Yellowhammers but hadn’t sent them for a while. I am waiting for it to feed again to confirm sighting. I am very close to Farmland and Trees. Thanks for your reply.

I am certainly not claiming to be an expert, but….

Serin is the most obviously ‘canary like’ bird but given the time of year and location I think that you can be fairly confident that what you saw was indeed a Yellowhammer.

I live in Butleigh, where Compton Street and Wood Lane have historically been very good places to see Yellowhammer, but the last couple of years numbers heard and seen have been greatly reduced.

Kings Lane Ashcott I am new to this so I looked it up, it looked like a canary, very yellow in colour, I am not 100 per cent sure, about the same size as a canary. Help I need an expert here! It is feeding on seeds and scraps.
