Hi Stu, Dan is moving in today I think so waiting to hear from him. I know Greylake and Ham Wall and will be nice to meet up. Actually I’m something of a year Lister and sometime twitcher so if either of you (or anyone else) is happy to go further afield and share petrol would be great. It’s rather daunting as a lone female and my husband isn’t interested in bird watching.

See you soon,
Frankie

Hi Dan,

That’s great, hope you soon settle in. Cheddar Reservoir and the Strawberry Line are my local patches. Not sure if there’s a mechanism on this site for direct contact so if you email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) I can give you my mobile number. See you soon, Frankie

Hi Frankie, of course, you would be more than welcome.

My partner and I are moving to Axbridge on Saturday, so Cheddar res will likely end up as my local patch. I’ll likely be free mostly at weekends as I work as a surveyor/ecologist during the week. I’m very much looking forward to moving back to an area with good birding (as we have been living in the Midlands for 6 years after growing up in Norfolk) and Somerset has a good diversity of habitats. If there is a function to send email communication, I’m happy to give you my mobile number should you wish to exchange news.

All the best, Dan

I have also recently moved to Cheddar from North London and am finding my way around. If there’s room for one more may I join you sometime? I’m retired but Saturdays would be fine. Thanks, Frankie

Hi Stuart, many thanks for your kind offer, I will be in touch once we’ve settled in (likely April/May) and would really appreciate it. I suspect that I will only be available during the weekends, but that will depend upon work. We will be down in the area next weekend viewing properties, so I may try to convince the other half to go for a walk in the marshes to check out a few more areas… Good birding, Dan

Hi Dan

Great relocation you will be a stones throw for the levels and various reserves like. Ham wall / Catcott / Shapwick heath / Greylake / Westhay moor / Swell wood / etc etc.

Also not to far from the coast with various reserves like Steart marsh and spots like Porlock and Hurlstone point and Brean down etc etc.

Its hit and miss regards how busy reserves get Ham wall is a very busy reserve especially around starling season but this ends soon around the end of march and it also depends on whats showing if you get a rarity at any of the reserve then it can get busy people come from all over the county and country to get a look.

I visit a lot of the hides in and around the area and never really struggle to get a seat and viewing position. People come and go quite quickly at the hides so no dramas on that score.

Happy to meet up and show you around no problems.

i am free most weekends but sadly have to work in the week mon to fri.

Kindest Regards

Stuart

Hi Dan

And welcome to the forum and to the area. Where abouts are you based in somerset?.

Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart, thanks for the welcome. We will be moving to the Wells/Glastonbury area, which I think looks like a handy location for the Mendips/Levels and within easy reach of the coast. To have access to moorland/coast/heaths/marshes and reservoirs within 45mins drive will be great and I’m particularly keen on trying Brean Down in October as it looks like a good migrant trap. Are any of the reserves within the levels complex less watched than others? Cheers

Hi all,

Just wanted to drop a quick message as my partner and I will be moving to Somerset this coming spring. Very much looking forward to birding in a new area, having lived on the Oxfordshire/Warwickshire border for the last 5 years - certainly not the most exciting area for birding, but numerous foreign trips have balanced things a bit.
Prior to living in the Cotswolds, we lived briefly in Nottinghamshire and Essex, but I grew up in Norfolk. Keen to hear from any locals who would be willing to show me a few sites off the beaten track, can repay in kind with gen for other areas.

Hopefully post the odd sighting on here once we’ve moved and I’ve decided on a local patch.

Cheers and good birding, Dan
