I was surprised to see a pair of bar headed geese fly over my head at Otterhampton marshes this morning flying from the Severn estuary toward the Parrett There wasn’t much on the marsh as there were workmen and a digger out in the middle. There was a large flock of golden plover mixed with lapwing, 1 ruff, 1 curlew sandpiper and a few dunlin to the right of the Quantock view hide and 2 little stint and 2 ringed plover to the left.
Further round, past the Polden hide in the freshwater pool were 2 pairs of dabchick and in the surrounding bushes were a chiffchaff and a Cetti’s warbler. On Steart marsh opposite were a few more ringed plover and about 20 dunlin with another flock of lapwing and golden plover with a male marsh harrier behind.
Female Merlin on a metal perch in the distance at Steart Marshes this afternoon. Seen off by a Kestrel that took it’s perch!
A little later the Merlin flew right past me, closest views I’ve had of one!
Also a pair of Marsh Harriers, small group of Ringed Plover, Curlews, Redshanks, Dunlin, Lapwing and a big flock of Golden Plover.
