9th April. Pied Flycatchers at Bincombe and Lady Combe. Prospecting for nests. Cuckoo at Knackers Hole and one in full voice bottom of Frog Combe,seeming to answer the call of the steam train!

Walking up there last week (in the cloud) I heard but didn’t see a green woodpecker at Crowcombe Park Gate. Up the main track to the north a skylark was singing its heart out beside the track, and I also thought I heard a stonechat. Walking down Lady’s Edge towards Somerton Combe a large bird flew through the trees. I didn’t see it properly but although I thought it looked like a buzzard it seemed unlikely among the trees. I wondered if it was one of the bigger owls.

3 Mistle Thrush and small flock of Chaffinch at Higher Knapp.
Frog Combe, several songthrushes and 6 goldcrests.
