The black metal bridge ~400m downstream of Wallbridge traffic lights in south-east Frome (close to Asda), is becoming a reliable place to see water rails in the open. On Thursday last week, one in the mist on the storm drain close to the bridge, and twice recently around the pond/open water below the station side of the bridge. These birds don’t seem shy or flighty and are fairly easy to see, for those of us who regard water rail as ‘a difficult tick’! Also, water rails winter and probably breed at Rodden Reserve, nearby, which is worth a visit while it open to the public 1st August to 1st February.
