I see that there will be £3 daily charge introduced from 14th November. Hopefully all the income generated from this will be ploughed back into the Somerset Levels and will therefore benefit the local facilities that have already seen a significant number of new hides over the last 12 months. Obviously RSPB members will not be charged, so it might encourage an increase in membership. There are huge financial challenges facing the RSPB so overall this should not be seen as a negative development if it contributes to maintaining the high standards that we and the wildlife all enjoy. However, I hope it does not deter the families from coming with their children as it is these children who need to develop an interest in wildlife for these NNRs to have a future. The RSPB already have an active and successful program with the local schools which should be commended, but at weekends we all need to encourage others to get out into the wild environment, enjoy it and the benefits it will bring to life and health.
