A productive morning’s birding with Paul Clement, produced;
Minehead Seawatch 0700 - 0845
120+ Manx Shearwater, most going up-channel including one flock of 60+
2 Fulmar -speculating that these might be part of the small breeding population in the very far west of the county ?
2 Gannet - both down-channel - 1 imm and 1 full adult
5 Razorbill fairly close in, going up-channel, also a larger flock of unidentified auks up-channel
An Exmoor combe in the SOS recording area 0930 - 1230
plenty of evidence of breeding birds present, including:
a pair of Redstart visiting a nest hole low down in the bole of a tree, including male coming out of the nest hole with a fecal sac, and female entering with insect prey
a pair of Whinchat, with both male and female carrying beakfuls of food to nest site
probably, 2 Stonechat families, each with up to 5 or 6 fledged young
3 pairs Lesser Redpoll, including 2 males in display song flight
6 maybe 8 Grey Wagtail, with the males holding territory very aggressively, continually keeping other male wagtails off their stretch of water
Dipper feeding in stream, then seen carrying food item in straight and level flight back up combe at above bush height, presumably back to nesting location
both Willow Warbler and Common Whitethroat flying, carrying off fecal sacs
also Paul heard Grasshopper Warbler (if I missed anything off, I am sure Paul will add to the post)
