22 Goosanders this morning on my monthly WeBS count walk round the lake. This is a very high day count. Birds tend to feed on the surrounding steams and rivers during the day and return to roost on the lake at dusk and leave early morning. The reason for this change ln their behaviour is no doubt due to the recent high volumes of rain which means the streams are very high and more difficult to find fish. My highest day count was under similar conditions on 7 February 2024 when 47 were present. The highest count on the lake was at dawn on the 1st of January 2015 when I counted 120. Given the recent lower numbers of Goosanders wintering in recent years it seems unlikely this number will ever be superseded.
Only other birds of note were one Wigeon, calling frequently with Mallard, now rare here, and 14 Herons.
