They can spend a lot of time underwater (& quite difficult to spot if they head out into middle)
Had another good look today, a pair of Scaup opposite the Axbridge entrance, another pair on the south side together with a 1st winter Male so 5 in all. I couldn’t find the BN Grebe/s although someone told me two had been reported on Birdguides this morning ? if they were present they managed to elude me.
A quick visit to the Axbridge side today - one of the closest birds and directly in front of the entrance incline was a male Scaup amongst 100’s of Pochard.
Couldn’t find anything else of interest except a 1st winter Kittiwake which flew off west gaining height at about 1515hrs.
Most birds still by Axbridge entrance plus a male Red-crested Pochard today
Merry Christmas all. Both BN Grebe, 2 Scaup, a male Goldeneye and 4 Wigeon in with Pochard and Tufted ducks, all by the Axbridge entrance today around 13:30
1 BN grebe, m+f scaup and 2m goosander this morning. Sean reported both BN grebes present on Sunday (ebird), so different to the huntspill one. I did see 5 shoveler and 10-12 teal there last Thursday when looking for the previous day’s GN diver.
Black-necked grebe bobbing around near the boathouse around 10.30 today
Black-necked grebe still between boat house and Cheddar tower, 11:00
21-Nov-2025 (12:40 hrs)
Red-crested Pochard: 8, at least 3 drakes (continually diving), very distant ‘scope views looking from just west of the Cheddar Tower to the birds in the SW corner of Cheddar Res.
1 juv wheatear on the res wall near Axbridge tower today. 4 Red-crested Pochard (3 male) on the res amongst 7 or 8 other duck species too
Abbotsbury born white ZXP, AJX and AJY are still present amongst 47 mute swans, since I first photographed their rings on 6th October. There are also 4 yellow ringed birds that are from the moulting flock at abbotsbury - HHV, HJN, HLO and HLP, which I have seen on and off since then (it’s rare that they come out of water enough to read the rings!)
A lot less mud showing - the big peninsula is now an island again.
Little stint present again this morning by the Cheddar tower, with a dunlin and snipe, many teal.
Little stint this morning, no egrets
This afternoon: 1 curlew sandpiper, 1 ringed plover, 5 snipe and 1 great egret (AJP)
