Despite patches of very poor weather, the Great White Egrets have had another record year on the Avalon Marshes.
There were 97 nesting attempts in 10 colonies across Shapwick Heath, Ham Wall and Westhay, with two additional single nests outside the reserve boundaries. 100 chicks fledged from 54 of these nests, of which 32 were ringed. So far we have had reports from 11 of these fledged young - from Yorkshire, Northumberland, Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Cambridgeshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Powys and the Wirral, as well as a couple within Somerset.

Please do keep your eyes out for any ringed birds, and let me know - don’t assume we know already, because we may not!
