Hi folks
Just wondered whether anyone else had seen a large white-winged gull on the spit where Herring Gulls tend to gather, away to the left of South Esplanade?
On the 18th (Sunday), I arrived around 9am-9.30am with the murky conditions limiting viewing and Stert Island was not even visible due to the thin mist.
Whilst I admittedly struggle with larids, I have seen several Glaucous Gulls before, and know this bird was too large for Iceland Gull. Unfortunately, it took to flight and flew out of the bay just before several other birders appeared, all looking in vain for the Kentish Plover. When the conditions cleared there was no sign of my mystery gull.
It was definitely a white-winged gull, by my estimation a 3cy bird with marbled/mottled white/brown on the wing, predominantly white, so it stood out amongst the Herring Gulls even in the murky conditions. However, when it flew I could detect a light-brown trailing edge to the wings and tail tip, but not blackish by any means and fairly insignificant.
I know Glaucous Gulls are rare here (or so I was told), but wondered of this could be a hybrid Glaucous-Herring Gull?
Sorry I could not get more detail in poor viewing conditions, the bill may have been all-dark but I really couldn’t see well enough. This was my first visit to Burnham, so I am not familiar with the birding situation here, but wanted to post this in case anyone else had seen my bird.
