Found a juv GN Diver on Cheddar this afternoon. Might be Alick’s bird… Very mobile and apparently fit and healthy. Gave me the runaround for a while travelling long distances underwater as it dived frequently, but ended up settled off the playing fields and close in.
A black-throated was at Burnham a while ago & same may have been seen further up the Severn in South Glos shortly after - seems to be a lack of GND sightings in usual places locally this winter
An unusual record from South Somerset. I was driving from Barrington to Hambridge via Westport on the B3168 at around 0945 this morning, 30 December, when I saw a GND flying high and parallel to the road - travelling SW. At first I thought it was a cormorant but the flight jizz and plumage was so typical that I am confident of my ID.
