2 churring on Mendip last night after the rain cooled things off, so no flights seen & a lot fewer midges about, although bats were still flying & a distant tawny owl (but it wasn’t in the main woods)

Fantastic 45 minutes spent listening to and watching Nightjars on the Western end of the Blackdowns this evening, 2 pairs 400-500 meters apart. Watching the closest pair the male started Churring from a small tree at 9.51 then followed constant flights from both male and female until it got to dark to see. Both males still churring when I left at 10.35

Finally churring, flight calls and wing clapping, with 3 close passes overhead- best evening I’ve had on mendip for years, although can’t claim any more than one involved

Minimum of 4 Churring Nightjars last night in East Somerset, possibly 5 or 6. Great close views, down to a few metres at 9.37pm last night with Churring before then.
We stayed until well after nightfall and what a spectacular sound Nightjars make on a still evening.

2 Churring Nightjars about 400 meters apart on the western end (Somerset side) of the Blackdowns this evening. Started churring at 9.57. One seen very briefly in flight.

At least 3 Nightjars in East Somerset so far.

Usual site on the Mendips: A male, seen well, churring from tree top at roadside, then flew out over the nearby moorland at 21:30hrs. It, or another, churring on the moorland at 22:00hrs.

Two churring, one of which seen briefly but closely, at North end of the Quantocks 9.30-10 this evening.

Those who know will know 😉

It would be good to know where ‘there’ is…..  Left to guess, I might suggest Stockhill ?

Didn’t hear any there Tuesday night - has anyone this year? Was surrounded by feeding bats and could hear distant tawnys

During last nights beautiful evening, a later stroll up the woods resulted in being so lucky to witness 3 nightjars flying around, calling and wing clapping overhead then lots of churning heard! Bats, tawny young calls, 3 deer and 4 glow worms too! (And can’t forget the song thrushes singing too with the stunning orange sky behind the pines)
