An excellent days birding around the County yesterday - the following being the highlights:
Ham Wall - 5 Garganey (4 drakes & 1 duck) from Tor View Hide plus another from VP1; from VP1 also 65 Blackwits, 3 Common Redshank, 5 Snipe and most suprisingly a “sumplum” Spotted Redshank. At least 2 Cuckoos were also heard.
Tealham & Tadham Moors - 1 Wheatear (Tealham am) & 165 Cattle Egrets (late pm) at the south-east end of Totney Drove plus numerous Skylarks in song and a Sedge Warbler back on its usual territory!
Shapwick Heath: not much of note on Noah’s except for some significant Pike activity below the hide! Another birder said that he had seen the Purple Heron fly across the lake at about 0900 hrs.
All this backed up by regular sightings of Marsh Harrier & Great Egret together with “booming” Bitterns; Reed Warblers and Whitethroats were also back on territory.
A walk top to bottom and back along Bin Combe produced no less than 11 male Pied Flycatchers, a calling Tawny Owl and a very vocal Green Woodpecker.
