On a circular walk from Panborough to Westhay Moor Nature Reserve yesterday, the highlight was the stretch of Lewis’s Drove from the peat workings to North Chine Drove. In around 10 minutes, we had very close views of a calling great white egret that flew up from the fishery, watched a green sandpiper feeding in the water in the drain, and saw a flock of around 45 cattle egret scattered through the field near the T-junction. There was also a finch which flew over out of sight in the low cloud. From the calls, I’m fairly sure it was a crossbill.
