A flock of 50-60 Golden Plover this afternoon in the field south and east of the reserve along with Lapwing, Fieldfare, and Canada and Grey Lag Geese. Redwing had also been reported earlier.

No particular highlights in this months WeBS survey. I counted 546 Widgeon which is quite high for Westhay, they were present on most water bodies, but the main contingent were on the Lakes adjacent to Lewis Drove.
There were 3 Goosander and a pair of Pintail on 70 Acres, which, apart from a handful of Shoveler were the only duck on the entire Lake, the usual residents had moved elsewhere to shelter from the high winds.
Three very large Gull flocks in fields at Panborough, around 1000 Black Headed and 100+ each of Lesser Black Backed and Herring Gulls.
A total of 140 Cattle Egrets, at 8 different locations on Westhay Moor, plus another dozen on Tadham Moor

Plenty of all the usual suspects today at Westhay Reserve and the surrounding area. Widgeon (428), Gadwall (124) numbers down, but an unusually high count of 60 Tufted Ducks. Only two Pintail, probably the same pair present since December, plus a single Goldeneye and 12 Goosander on 20 Acre Lake.  There was a lone male Pochard at Lewis Drove, the first of this species since this time last year !
I could only find 72 Cattle Egrets, all in three fields close to the junction of Lewis and North Chine Drove. There was a flock of circa 500 Lapwing feeding in two fields south of the Reserve at the other end of Lewis Drove.
Even with my rudimentary knowledge I would venture to say there was a “Tristis” Chiffchaff insecting in the Willows to the right of the Viridor Hide, it didn’t speak, but very obvious buff coloured eye stripe and flanks.
A Harrier flew across the Reserve at about 1300hrs, fairly certain it was a female Hen Harrier, it went over and away from me, couldn’t see it’s rump but looked too small for a Marsh Harrier.
On the way there and back looked for the Tundra Bean Goose at Tealham, but no sign of it. Highlight at Tealham was a raptor that flew across the road in front of me and landed in a nearby bush. Initially thought it was a Sparrowhawk, but stopped to check it out and it was a female Merlin.
Finally a GW Egret on farmland just to the east of Rooksbridge on Mark Moor.

Westhay Moor area produced reasonable numbers of most ducks, unusually high count of 466 Widgeon. The pair of Goldeneye earlier reported by Andy Mears were still present on 20 Acre Lake as were 10 Goosander. Looking back through the WeBS data Goldeneye were annually present here until 2012, since then only two in Feb 2014 and one in December 2019. No sign of last months Mandarin.
