Several photos of osprey still at reservoir yesterday on Twitter
The black swans were on the west side late yesterday afternoon with a greylag. Wonder where they go?
Nothing unusual there this morning - 29 mutes, inc. the 2 imms, but 2 of the adults departed when the windsurfers got going (didn’t see the blacks at all today). c.60 teal still, 11 wigeon, 2 pairs of gadwall on axbridge side with mallard, & 15 tufties with the 1000+ coot to south, rest was mostly cormorants, GC grebes & gulls. Only 20 linnet at SW.
not at the res, , Cheddar Bridge campsite by the St Andrews church 4 Mistle Thrush in flight together, and a single Little Egret in the adjoining River Yeo .. Owners there have seen Otters in the river very recently from their windows overlooking the river
Only 25 mutes this morning, but a second immature, although it departed just after 9 to the SE with 3 adults (taking a greylag with them, which headed towards the gorge). Didn’t see the blacks, have they also left? 9.15 the swans returned & Blacks are now hanging out on axbridge side with the coot.
Best thing was kingfisher by the cheddar tower.
Osprey went in at least twice by the cheddar tower at 9.40, before heading off, empty clawed, to the SE, pursued by a crowd of gulls. Fog is starting to clear.
Wednesday 13, midday. 2 Black Swans still present near the Axbridge entrance and, at around 12.15, the Osprey appeared from the south and did a full circuit of the res, diving twice but not seen to catch anything. Plenty of Teal and Coot but only a smattering of other species. No waders visible.
Teusday morning near the Tennis club car park area, a Sparrow Hawk perched on one of the concrete bollards, Wednesday morning , a Jay in the Middle Moor Lane and a Mistle Thrush at the Caravan Park close to St Andrews Church
Avocet reported first thing this morning, near cheddar tower, also the osprey (Twitter)
Later visitors only saw / got photos of the black swans in flight & the RC Pochard
I & another birder walked right around independently at lunchtime & neither saw any waders. The drake red crested Pochard (just coming out of eclipse) is back with the mallard flock, 60 teal, 4 wigeon, 3 pairs gadwall & a female shoveler (maintaining its independence) were dotted around. Now 35 mute swans, but still only the one immature (& the two black), with groupings of 40 & 20 GC grebes (plus others elsewhere) amongst 1500+ coot. c.30 linnet on South side concrete & a similar number of goldfinch on grass. Osprey wasn’t seen then, but apparently had been earlier (most of reports I’ve heard of have been morning or later in afternoon).
Also a 2.5ft dead pike on West shore, which had had most of chest eaten away, but no idea what had been at it. Almost all the weed that pec sand was feeding amongst has been covered by rising water levels, but there was 1 (or 2) grey wagtail along south edge.
Pectoral Sandpiper still present (or another?) in a brief visit at 11.30am today (7th) feeding on a mat of floating weed off the Cheddar Tower before being flushed by a BH Gull and flew off towards the SW corner. The Osprey also still present and made 2 circuits of the E,side of the Res in the 30 mins I was there.
around 07:00 this morning, two instances where a gull was chasing a small wader, not sure of species ,[poor light]first was adjacent to the sports field for about 30 yards wader eventually got away, second instance same type of attack going clockwise from the cheddar tower, gull tried on two attempts to physically attack the wader ,birds went from my view before any end of the attack
It was on Avonbirding & birdguides at 7.30am, but we had great views between 3 & 3.30pm of the osprey circling between the cheddar tower & disturbing the gulls / ducks in front of sailing club before flying back across centre of reservoir to tower & heading back towards sailing club (with no attempted dives), then grabbing a fish from the fishing ponds (behind us & just out of view).
Also c.40 teal, 20 wigeon, a few gadwall, 1 partial eclipse drake shoveler on north edge, the two black swans stood on east side (no sign of rings) with 29 mutes (only 1 immature). 21 linnet in front of sailing club, with 40+ more on other side. At least 50 great crested grebe gathered around weed to south, with a few more scattered elsewhere, & most of the coot keeping over that way too. A few pied wags & meadow pipits, plus 3 wheatear along south edge (1 imm, 1 very bright Greenland male) & a jackdaw with some white feathers near the axbridge tower. 1 swallow, shortly followed by 5 or 6 house martins heading south & a buzzard feeding on something in a field to south.
The water level had definitely come up since last week, with plenty more pouring in from the inlets.
Osprey reported again both days over the weekend, but pec seems to have gone
The osprey was also around in the morning, but seen off by crows. Avon birding reports that the pec & a med gull were also there (plus a Leach’s Petrel seen from berrow beach). The glossy ibis from catcott may now be the one at bleadon (so very close to Somerset border) & another pectoral is at chew.
