Significant fall of Meadow Pipits, well over a 100 today. Wheatears have become scarce, only one in the last few days, although I’ve probably been too late for them, the areas of cropped grass they favour are also favoured by Human Beings for picnicking. A few Blackcaps and Willow Warblers were fresh in on Saturday, but none today, also, daily, 3 or 4 Chiff Chaffs, Chiff Chaffing at various locations middle slopes and around the top, not sure if these are residents or migrants.
Wall Brown Butterflies seemed to have had a re-emergence, 7 Saturday, but today in ideal calm and sunny conditions counted at least 18, a dozen, probably more, in the area of the lower Jubilee Cairn, all looking very fresh.
I’ve made the effort to Yomp to the top of Brent Knoll virtually every day for the last fortnight in the hope of seeing some visible migration, it’s never going to compete with Brean Down for pulling down passage birds but there have been Wheatears every day, usually one or two, a max count of five on Friday, also singles of Whinchat and Tree Pipit plus a handful of Meadow Pipits, Linnets and Sky Larks which may be residents. Today, there were three Wheatears, but a significant fall of Warblers, dozens of them in the Copses and thickets ringing the summit, mainly Blackcaps but also a few Willow Warblers and Whitethroats. Resident Birds seen daily include Kestrel, Raven, Goldfinches and Green Woodpeckers (the latter usually feeding on Anthills on the ridge leading up from East Brent Church).
Butterfly numbers have reduced dramatically over the fortnight, I haven’t seen a Common Blue or Small Heath for over a week, Small Coppers are still out and about usually defending clumps of Ragwort or Fleabane on the lower slopes. Yesterday I saw a Wall Brown, quite scarce here, normally only on the summit, (usually in the area around the Trig Point).
