Sounds like the majority carried on over Compton Martin (avonbirding)
Excellent, I managed 4 this afternoon whilst working outside, but an approximate total of 14 seen by 6 observers between Wavering down/Cross and Axbridge today, with no duplication of timescales - likely tip of the iceberg. More tomorrow!
This morning while having a coffee, the farmer at Five Bells was cultivating his field and attracted a flock of between 50-60 Herring Gulls and one Lesser Black -backed Gull. After about a quarter of of an hour, all the Gulls took off without any sort alarm. The reason became clear as a couple of Red Kites arrived and started following the tractor. The numbers of Red Kites reached 5 and the Gulls did not get a look in. Eventually the Kites dispersed and the last one was seen rising on a thermal at about 11.30 a.m. and drifting off East towards Williton. The Gulls then returned to their original feeding stations.
There has been a significant movement in the last 2-3 days (though it has been a good spring for passage birds), I recorded 5 birds within 30 minutes on Saturday, all very high and to the south east. As an example, there were 79 in 1 hour on Saturday in Bridport, and counts of over 150 at various sites in Cornwall. It’s well worth keeping an eye open tomorrow as the passage should pick up again once the northerly blow eases up.
A Red Kite over fields on the southeast boundary of Crewkerne at 10.26am this morning. ST446085. Approximately 500ft altitude, circling and drifting southwest; eventually going out of sight over Henley copse.
And one over St Michael’s Avenue Yeovil at 1330. Drifted west after crow encounter. Similarly, first garden sighting for me here too
10.45 Soaring high over Highbridge/Burnham. First ever sighting of a red kite from our garden in 26 years.
