A couple of years ago I saw a Stoat in partial ermine on West Sedge Moor.
I thought this very rare in southern England as all the many Stoats I have seen in winter have been brown.
I searched the literature both books and internet and could find no information on likelihood of occurrence.
Does anyone now of how common this might be?

Couldn’t find the Hen Harrier on KSM this afternoon, but lots of the usual waders around, including at least one Ruff. Also a GW Egret, an assortment of Buzzard plumages, c.25 Siskins and 2 Redpolls over. Mammals included 10+ Roe Deer and a Stoat which was mostly in ermine, with just a few brown patches on face, neck and back.

Presumably the same ring-tail (fem/juv) Hen Harrier, that was seen yesterday at Greylake, was hunting off First Sedgemoor Drove on King’s Sedge Moor at 15:20 today. Also, far out on the Moor, there was two large flocks of Golden Plover, each of c.1000 birds.
