Visited Chilton Moor at 1530hrs today hoping to find a Short Eared Owl, no SEO’s but lots else – a juvenile Peregrine, probably the “putative” Calidus bird (absent from Catcott Lows earlier) was perched at the top of the first pylon east of the bridge over the South Drain, further on and in the area usually favoured by SEO’s was a female Merlin in low Willow Bush, on view for 15 minutes before flying off north. A distant airborne Harrier sp. to the East was probably a Marsh Harrier but at about 1540hrs a ringtail Hen Harrier flew in from the North West and drifted away South East. Driving home, north of the South Drain I saw a bird I initially thought was a Kestrel sat on a Telegraph Pole, as I got closer it appeared too small and short tailed to be a Kestrel, it dropped off the post and glided off low to the South East, another Merlin – the earlier female had disappeared into this area but I’m fairly certain this was a male and a different bird although I didn’t get the best of views. Finally, an adult male Peregrine perched on a pylon near Pill Road on Allerton Moor between Mark and Rooksbridge. Wintering Stonechats and lots of Winter Thrushes, mainly Fieldfares on both Moors.
