We had an excellent walk this morning at Westhay with 9 people and we were enjoying ourselves so much we didn’t finish until 12.30. We visited the new Island Hides, Tower Hide and North Hide, and it was chilly to begin with but warmed up to about 12 degrees by the end. A bittern was booming most of the morning, and one was seen flying. Other highlights included a flock of sand martins and swallows, a hobby, coots with chicks and close up views of Cetti’s warblers. A cuckoo has been heard at Westhay recently but we only thought we heard a brief “cuck” this morning; perhaps others are still on their way here.
Meet at the Westhay Moor car park on Daggs Drove ST457437.at 9am . Leaders Alison Uren and Alison Everett. Some areas might be a bit muddy so suitable footwear advised but on the whole the walking is easy. . Hopefully there will be plenty of migrants to see or hear as well as wetland species , a cuckoo has been recorded in recent days.
Nearest toilets are at the Avalon Marshes Centre south of Westhay village.
