Please do keep an eye out for rings on the great whites…
There were 2 dunlin in the afternoon (plus RC pochard, whooper & black swan between axbridge tower & sailing club)
This morning 2 lapwings on the island opposite Cheddar Tower. Just one dunlin and one little stint with 2 ruff visible. About 8 roosting snipe. Will search more diligently for the garganey next time!!
To add to Frankie’s totals today, a Garganey this evening. A warm and buffy individual with big round flank feathers and very dull wings. Adult female perhaps. Also a Curlew that disappeared quite quickly, direction unknown.
c20 Egrets flew over the A371 just NW of Westbury-sub-Mendip heading off the Mendips and onto the Levels, presumably Cattles heading to roost.
This morning:: 3 little stints, 2 ruff, 2 ringed plover, 7 dunlin, 8 snipe, 30 great egrets and the whooper swan
Saw 2 of the 3 stints this afternoon plus the whooper and black swan, 26 great egrets, 8 snipe, 2 ruff and 6 dunlin
This afternoon 28 great egrets! Also 16 grey herons, 7 snipe, 2 ringed plovers, 3 ruff, 3 dunlin, a redshank (only our second in 3 years here) and 3 little stints (thanks to Frankie for locating these for us!). Water level seemed fractionally higher.
This afternoon 3 little stints, 3 ruff, 7 dunlin, 2 ringed plovers, 3 snipe, 22 great egrets, at least 7 little egrets and 14 grey herons amongst others. The whooper swan was still there and the RC Pochard was reported.
There are also a few pintail out there (haven’t seen any reports of the bar-head last few days)
Stephen Curtis visited Cheddar Reservoir, this afternoon. The water levels were the lowest that I have ever seen there. This has led to a staggering number of Egrets and Herons feeding, in close proximity, in the remaining water areas near to the Tower. We counted 22 Great White Egrets, a minimum of 9 Little Egrets and 10 Grey Herons.
Waders are also taking advantage of the muddy margins. with 3 Ruff ( including 1 smaller Reeve ), 3 Little Stints, 4 Dunlin, 4 Snipe all observed.
The Black Swan and Whooper Swan were also present, as well as Wigeon and Shoveler with the Teal, Gadwall and Mallard.
2 Little Stint this morning. Also 1 Whooper Swan and the Black Swan. Other waders included Ruff, Snipe, Dunlin and Ringed Plover. Big number of Teal and some Gadwall, Shoveler and Wigeon.
Little stint still showing well near Cheddar Tower. Also 6 dunlin, ringed plover, 3 snipe and 3 ruff. Bar-headed goose and black swan on the island with Canadas. Also 17 great egrets and all the usual winter ducks including several pintail. A wheatear south of Cheddar Tower and a buzzard over.
Whooper still with the mutes this morning (black swan has also been reported again recently)
Glossy ibis was reported to have flown off east at 9.50am, however, a whooper swan was still there, having been first seen last night
Around 4pm this afternoon, the black tern and little stint were still there, near Cheddar tower, but no sign of the glossy ibis. Also 2 ruff, 2 ringed plover, 1 common sandpiper. 3 snipe, at least 12 dunlin and double figures of great egrets, as well as very high numbers of teal.
